Our Story
The Uniting Church in Australia
The Uniting Church in Australia was formed on June 22, 1977, as a union of three churches: the Congregational Union of Australia, the Methodist Church of Australasia and the Presbyterian Church of Australia.
In uniting, the members of those bodies testified to “that unity which is both Christ’s gift and will for the Church”. Ecumenism remains a vital aspect in all of the church’s life and work – in congregations, national commitments to work together with other churches, and relationships and partnerships with churches of various denominations in Asia and the Pacific.
Bankstown District Uniting Church
The Bankstown District Uniting Church is a congregation of the Uniting Church in Australia, Georges River Presbytery – Synod of NSW and ACT. The Bankstown District Uniting Church has a long history in the district and is keen to be a loving, servant, community of faith in a rapidly changing environment.
Over recent years many local churches have joined together into two worshipping communities: the central Church at 72 Kitchener Parade, Bankstown and a local church in Kerrinea Road, Sefton. There is also the Christian Resource Centre on the Hume Highway in Bankstown which is used by Bankstown Arabic Brethren Church. We also have links with Greenacre and Punchbowl Uniting Churches.
The Bankstown District Uniting Church staff comprises of:
Minister - Rev’d Dr. Gaby Kobrossi,
Youth Leader - Benjie Asoumaning,
International Student Ministry - Assistant Chaplin Yeji Choucar.
The Parish Council has oversight of the spiritual life of the congregation and there is a developing network of pastoral carers.
The congregation is composed of people of many ethnic backgrounds as well as people born in Australia.
We have links with other ethnic ministries and are developing further links with community organizations in the local area.
